Most cloud storage offerings are optimised for fast write operations with data residing on random access and expansive media, which is fine for hot active production data.
As data gets older, it is good practice to store data on a lower-cost medium, often on hyperscaler tiers designed for archiving or infrequent access, like nearline storage.
Organisations usually opt for the mid-priced nearline storage tier for data they expect will be recalled infrequently and only use the deeper archive tiers as an insurance policy, never expecting to see the data again.
When data is stored on these deeper archive tiers, it is stored along with other cloud tenants and their workflow data. As the data is mixed up with the other clients’ workloads, it takes an absolute age to recover data. This is because the hardware used to store archive data is designed to stream data in bulk, rather than in small increments.
The most efficient way for a hyperscaler to archive data is to store it in bulk when there is enough data to fill up a piece of media, so as not to waste space on the media while efficiently offloading data to free up space on the more expensive storage tier as soon as possible. However, recovering some call it ‘rehydrating’ the data is cumbersome, and this is a reason why hyperscalers charge hefty retrieval and egress fees.
It also means your data is inevitably archived across multiple different individual pieces of media, along with all their other clients’ data.
When it comes to retrieving your data, each piece of media must be loaded before it can be read, which is a time-consuming process; hence, the 48-hour SLA the hyperscalers have for archive offerings.
